Which graphics card is better, AMD or NVidia?

NVidia has the most powerful single card on the market right now.The GPUs from NVidia are also, on the whole, more energy efficient.AMD also offers some advantages.A particular AMD card will normally be (approximately) equivalent to a card from the preceding nVidia GPU generation in the same “line position,” but will cost less.(For example, an RX 470 is comparable to a GTX 970 but costs around 30% less.)

In addition, AMD has created “Mantle,” a low-level GPU instruction language that allows an app to send instructions directly to the GPU without first being interpreted through an API (and thus running more quickly and efficiently), but this is only useful if the app you’re running supports it.As a result, if a game uses Mantle, it may run better on an AMD R9 370X (for example) than a (more powerful) GTX 960.

In short, nVidia has maintained the edge in overall GPU power and electrical efficeincy through each of the last four generations of graphics cards, while AMD has maintained the edge in value-per-dollar.

Amd are hotter that Nvidia when in use

AMD graphics cards run a little hotter than Nvidia graphics cards. The Radeon RX580, for example, is comparable to the GTX1060, but it consumes more power and generates more heat. This does not have to be a source of concern for AMD fans.

The fact is that the manufacturer will supply an appropriate cooling solution, and your GPU will be secure if your PC chassis has any airflow.

Fact is, AMD is using a step older manufacturing process, that costs less, for their mid-tier products so it may look as if they are more comparable to previous 900 series Nvidia GPU generation in terms of thermal dissipation and power consumption.

Comparably, I own a GTX980 which will trade blows in performance with GTX1060, but it does spend a bit more power with higher TDP. However, mine is an Asus Strix GTX 980 with a very elaborate GPU cooling solution.
