In the poem “To an Oriole” [1], novelist and poet Edgar Fawcett inquires about the origin and nature of the Oriole. He likens the northern music chicken to a “scrap of sundown with a voice” and an orange tulip in a forgotten backyard that was magically remodeled. This poetic and mystical imagery around Orioles might be discovered all through classical literature and mythology. In many cultures, their presence was considered a divine and prophetic image of creativity, prosperity, and group. These three virtues are slightly synonymous with Ubuntu’s spirit; subsequently, we needed to make sure our muse was given an inventive interpretation befitting its oracular aura.

When tasked with depicting our aureate mascot, the Design crew at Canonical discovered inspiration from astrological iconography. Marcus Haslam, the Magician, explains:

“Incorporating the adjective (Oracular) with the Oriole was a problem. I needed this to be in step with the model components we have now in our design system. The usage of the circle, line illustrations, and coloration palette slot in effectively and a great start line. My first process was constructing the Oriole chicken out of concentric circles, this may kind the centerpiece. As it progressed, I added different components to the design of the herald “Oracular.” The (all-seeing) eye with the circle of pals inside was present, and the crystal ball added a playful facet to the mascot. I added planets across the periphery to finish the Ubuntu world. When animated, these transfer into place with a nod to the circle of pals emblem.”

“Designing the mascot, I always had the animation at the back of my thoughts and the way it may match. The concentric circles  proved a beneficial asset; it created a pleasant rhythm and motion for this Oracular legendary world.”
